2005 Australian Blog Awards – Nominations

It’s been almost a year since the inaugural Australian Blog Awards were held, and based on last years experience, I’m starting the nominations phase earlier this time.

So, I’m pleased to announce that nominations for the 2005 Australian Blog Awards are open.

The categories this year are:

  • Best Overall Australian Blog

  • Best Post on an Australian Blog

Location Categories

For a blog to be eligable for one of the location based awards, the blog’s main contributor(s) must reside in that state, territory or be overseas. A blog cannot be nominated for more than one of these blogs. Blogs with contributions coming equaly from more than one location will have to nominate which category they wish to contest.

  • Best NSW Blog
  • Best Victorian Blog
  • Best Tasmanian Blog
  • Best Queensland Blog
  • Best West Australian Blog
  • Best South Australian Blog
  • Best Northern Territory Blog
  • Best Australian Capital Territory Blog
  • Best Overseas Australian Blog

Style Categories

  • Best Humourous Australian Blog
  • Best Designed Australian Blog
  • Best Australian Personal Blog
  • Best Australian Political Blog
  • Best Australian Photo Blog
  • Best Australian Tech Blog
  • Best New Australian Blog
  • Best Australian Collaborative Blog

Nominations can be made by leaving a comment on this post, and they will accepted until the first week of January 2005 (exact date to be announced). Once the nominations have been compiled they’ll be announced, the voting phase will begin and votes will be accepted up until ABOUT the 25th of January 2005. Once again, the announced of the winners will be SCHEDULED to coincide with Australia Day i.e. 26th of January. However, ALL dates quoted are subject to change depending on work load… so don’t be surprised if there’s slippage in the schedule.

The voting system will once again be the much loved optional preferential voting system… but before you take the easy way out and take advantage of the “optional” aspect of the system, please keep in mind that preferences were vital in several categories last time.

Finally, I ask that when you’re making your nominations

  1. you provide the sites name
  2. you provide the sites address
  3. you limit your nominations to ONE per category (that way each nominations should get at least one vote)

As I don’t want to have to try to decipher the nominations. Also, if you notice that a site you considered nominating has already been nominated in a category, feel free to NOT nominate it again 🙂

Okay. Time to get nominating… and spread the word about the 2005 Australian Blog Awards, and spread it early.

[Update 15/12/04 23:25 – “Best Australian Collaborative Blog” category added]
[Update 16/12/04 23:55 – “Best Post on an Australian Blog” category added… suggested by Tim Dunlop of The Road To Surfdom fame. Also deleted to request that people not nominate sites already nominated, as doing so may have encouraged them to nominate another blog in its place, thereby potentially increasing the number of blogs that will not get a single first round vote 🙁 ]
[Update 01/01/2005 23:32 – Nominations will close on the 3rd of January. Lists of the nominations will be posted and the voting phase of the 2005 Australian Blog Awards will begin on the 4th of January, 2005, and remain open until the 25th of January. Winners will be announced on the 26th of January, 2005.]
[Update 03/01/2005 23:59 – Nominations are now closed!!!]

and i’d like to second the suggestion that all blogs nominated go into the vote for Best Australian Blog.

  4. I found a new blog last night and spent a delightful hour or so snickering and guffawing at the delightful writing.

Go read Aussie Mama. Don’t do it whilst drinking hot coffee in case you backblow hot drink up nose while laughing. Don’t start just at the latest post. Go back to archives. Start at the start. It’s a developing story.

I’ll vote it “Best Australian Blog I Only Just Discovered Before the End of 2004” if there is such a category in the 2005 Oz Blog Awards

  5. A little late, but I’d like to nominate Cameron Adams’ the man in blue. Cameron has made quite a name for himself in the international web design community, purely based on some of the ground breaking stuff he has authored this year. In my view it is a contender for Best Victorian Blog, Best Australian Technical Blog and Best Overall Blog, so consider it nominated for these categories.

  6. Seconding mattymcg’s nomination – Cameron’s site is one of the best designed sites anywhere… I often forget that he’s an Aussie as well. He should be up for Best Designed blog

I’d also like to throw in a wild card for best political blog in Alert and Alarmed. Evan doesn’t speak often, but when he does it’s worth listening to.

  7. Best Humourous Australian Blog Reasons You Will Hate Me (I still recall crying with laughter at many of the posts during the election – days after first reading them.)
Best VIC Blog – Fop (Will’s brand of pop culture related nuttery totally floats my boat. And he’s oh so devastatingly handsome!)
Best Australian Personal Blog – Darpism.com (Although he loves politics, it’s Darp’s more personal stories that earn this nomination – My Mate Farames was a brilliant tale, brilliantly told.)
Best Australian Political Blog – Completely Biased (Although posting has slowed down recently, let’s not forget the bootykicking posting frenzy undertaken by Dave Murray during the election, and how quickly the site rose up the ranks of the political blogging world)
Best Australian Photo Blog – Boudist.com (I’m constantly fascinated by The Boud’s awesome photo snapping skillz, so much so that I cornered him at Grogblogging and demanded to know how he managed to take a photo of himself in the reflection of aviator sunglasses without getting the camera in the pic. I am socially inept.)
Best WA Blog – Kick & Scream (I feel comforted that someone like Rob Corr will factor into the future of the Labor Party. Expect big things.)

  8. * Best Overall Australian Blog: Barista
    * Best Post on an Australian Blog: Robert Corr – Diana Elgar Unplugged

    Geographic

    * Best NSW Blog tie; Completely Biased and Suki Has An Opinion
    * Best Victorian Blog: Barista
    * Best West Australian Blog: Robert Corr, Kick & Scream
    * Best South Australian Blog: Public Opinion
    * Best Northern Territory Blog: Troppo Armadillo
    * Best Australian Capital Territory Blog: crazybrave
    * Best Tasmanian Blog: Big Bob

    Style Categories

    * Best Humourous Australian Blog: MsFits
    * Best Designed Australian Blog: Robert Corr, Kick & Scream
    * Best Australian Political Blog: Suki Has An Opinion
    * Best Australian Photo Blog: Boudist
    * Best New Australian Blog: Dream On Black Girl
    * Best Australian Collaborative Blog: Enmore Station
    * Best Australian Personal Blog: PS Life (where the bull never ends)

    Category Suggestion:

    * Best Australian Women’s and Family Issues Blog: Suki Has An Opinion

  9. My dears, we are confident that no one will want a nomination from Guru R.H. Nevertheless (knowing that stupidity can make you rich) he presses on.

Most humourous Australian blog: Between Coffees.
    http://www.anthonymalloy.com
(Funny, in a quiet way. -The best way.)

Best Australian Personal Blog: Diary of an Average Australian.
    http://www.toxiccustard.com
    (Most reasonable man in Australia.)

Best W.A. Blog: there’s only one catboy.
    http://felineboy.blogspot.com
(Gets snappy, but always polite to cats.)

Special R.H. Award (Sweetest Sweetheart): zucchinis in bikinis.
(The girl we’d all like to have married.)

And that’s it. That’s all. Well, thank goodness!
    R.H. (An asset to humanity)

  10. I’d like to move that only one vote be allowed for all state blog nominations.

ie if you want to vote for best NSW blog that should the only state category voted in.

allows people to decide where there interest lie without rewarding mediocre blogs with national exposure.

    cheers

  11. Oh, I didn’t realise Miss Piss (pissnvinegar.com) is Tasmanian. I’ll nominate her too.

I’d also like to nominate balmainboysdocry.blogspot.com for Best Newcomer and a posthumous (sp? – I’m tired, sorry) nomination for melbournelefty.blogspot.com for Best Overall Blog.

  12. Best Queensland blog: Dawei

    Best NSW blog: Tim Blair

Best Victorian blog: http://www.spinstartshere.com. Put them down for best collaborative blog, most humourous blog and best blog overall too.

    Best SA blog: falimoko.blogspot.com

Best ACT blog: tie between the-riotact.com and teejmahal.com.

    Best new blog: ivegotkarmatoburn.blogspot.com

    Best political blog: johnhoward.blogspot.com

Most obliging blogger: Keks. Thanks for the awards, man!

  13. At this late stage, I’m nominating:

    http://anonymouslefty.blogspot.com.

In other news, for those who nominated melbournelefty, posthumous nominations are still allowed, aren’t they? Unfortunately, those who hadn’t seen it will have to look at the google cache, because it’s had to be taken off-line… entirely…
