2005 Australian Blog Awards – Vote

It’s time to vote.

As with last years awards, there will be a degree of manual labour with the voting stage… more so for me than you, but none the less, to avoid “electoral abnormalities” such as those that plagued the recent Ukrainian elections the system will NOT be overly automated. This ballot is to be a one vote per person event so you, the voter, will have to email me to register for the vote. In return I’ll enter your email address into the voting software and send you a confirmation email to let you know where and when you can vote. I hope to reply to each registration request within a 24 hours. A pain, I know, but none of us want a revolution now do we.

So YOU send me a registration request, I email you a set of links where you can vote, and then YOU click on the links and make your selections using the “Optional Preferential Voting System“.

*** PLEASE DO NOT:

  1. Post the registration request email address on your, or anybody else’s site.
  2. Forward the voting links to people.

A list of all the nominees for each category has been collated and can be found below. They’ve been listed in no specific order (each was assigned a random number and sorted accordingly). Now all that remains to be done is to check them out and vote…

[Update 06/01/05 12:56 – Due to some minor technical difficulties with the voting software, there will be a delay of approximately 24 hours before Registration Request will be processed. Sorry.]

[Update 25/01/05 22:42 – It would appear that the polls close a tad early, so the votes will be accepted up until midday tomorrow to allow people to get in their votes. However, registrations to vote have closed.]

  1. Not that we have any hope of winning, but… we were nominated for best ACT blog and we’re not on the list? Also we’re having a technical problem with the email link to register to vote. Basically my mail program can’t send the email. Could keks please send me the voting links manually?

  2. Clearly I’ve missed a few things while collating the nominations… Thankfully, nobody has sent in any votes, so I can make the required changes a all will be JUST FINE… sorry 🙁

  3. Further to loadedog’s comment, I’m also having trouble registering, as my email was returned unsent. Yes, I took out the REMOVE bit. I’m not as blonde as I look!

  4. Um, I was on the list as well under personal blogs nominated by Darp, but the wrong address was posted, the correct one is: http://www.fulmination.com/home.html

I don’t stack up against the others in this category and have no hope of winning, but it was nice to be nominated.

I guess I’m just whoring for hits really. 🙂

  5. adamo – nobody nominated it… you’d think with 100,000 hits SOMEONE might have nominated you. 🙁
    dreadnought – no shouting please… 🙂

Anyone having trouble emailing me a request… there shouldn’t be any issues… I’ve got over 100 requests already, HOWEVER, I’d be happy to email you on the address you’ve included with your comment(s).

Everyone else… I’ve corrected my mistakes. Now it’s just a matter of fixing some minor issues with the voting software… THEN, we can start voting. Soon… I promise.

  6. I d-d-don’t care who’s got the n-n-numbers brother, as long as I g-g-get to c-c-count the v-v-v-votes. – Stammering Senator Patrick Kennelly, when told before an ALP Caucus meeting that [*****.com] had the numbers
    (smile)

  7. While there might be a few boo boos, don’t kick yourself too hard 🙂 You’re only human! Or ARE you?! Doo dooo doo dooo doo dooo doo dooo!

Thank you for organising this, by the way. The fact that people are bothering to offer constructive criticism is a sign that this thing is appreciated by the blogging community so don’t take it as an insult xxx

  8. Nah, you haven’t stuff up Vlado, quite the opposite. I discovered some great blogs through the awards last year, and this year is a feast – thanks for being such a generous host.

  9. Mr vlado, it would be astonishing if no errors were made. In the circumstances, they’re unavoidable.

Congratulations on the job you’re doing. I think it’s marvellous.

  10. Okay… it’s 2:39AM and debugging this voting software is giving me the sh!ts… I’m calling it a night… I’ll have to continue this tomorrow. Sorry about the delays. 🙁

And thanks for the kind words…

  11. dreadnought… it will be changed when I fix the other stuff i’ve buggered up.

in regards to his and your politics. i’ve hardly had time to sleep let alone read all the blogs nominated. from memory, i had not seen either of the blogs before they were nominated, and all i did when i visited the sites was to see if they existed, and even that process was bypassed in some cases (note falimako’s comments above).

IF i had an opinion of your, or any other blog, i wouldn’t be expressing it here during the nomination or voting phases of the awards… i’d hate to bias anyones vote… as if anyone would care what i had to say anyway… but it’s hardly the role of an election official/commision to make comments about candidates… is it.

so… dreadnought… and everyone else waiting for me to fix one of my MANY mistakes, or simply waiting for the promised email with the links so they may vote… thank you for your patience so far… just a little longer.

  12. I’m told the the US Navy has a dictum for pilots who get lost

    Climb, Conserve (fuel), Confess

A hell of a lot of the people who want to vote don’t read this site. If it’s at all possible you might want to just let them know there’s a hold up and you’ll be back to them as soon as possible.

    Just a suggestion.

    Good Luck.

  13. Seeing as I’ve an Oz tech blog, you might want to consult it when it comes to vote-counting using optional preferential systems.

OK, here it is, an article that gives a link to the source code used in the ACT’s election.

Open source, of course. It’s the only way to go. Note that eVACS is for the Hare-Clarke variant, rather more complex than most. See the Wired article on it.

The Open Votimg Consortium might be able to help, but a quick squizz I had at it didn’t show up anything immediately useful.

This data might help – but may instead show that hand-counting is the way to go for you, coding the solution is a bit more complex and difficult than it may appear at first. Your call.

Oh yes, my blog was nominated twice in the Tech Blog category, and isn’t on the list.

  14. Post Scriptum: AEBrain the Blog’s description is Intermittent postings from Canberra, Australia on Software Development, Space, Politics, and Interesting URLs.
    And of course, Brains…
    .
So although it’s a tech blog, if you want pure-tech, you’ll be disappointed. There’s too much politics, whimsy and entertainment. Philosophy. AI. A Cthulhu Christmas. You get the idea.
Though I led the software development team for the spaceflight avionics of FedSat, so it’s pretty strong on the Software and Space tech.

  15. It’s a good job you’re doing there….hopefully everything ok soon…then I can get down to votes…

One day, maybe even i might get nominated….or someone might read my blog. Link whoring? Maybe. Wishful thinking? More likely

  16. I tried to send keks and email to register and it failed. It was rejected. Please email me with what to do somebody.

    See below for details
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com.
I’m afraid I wasn’t able to deliver your message to the following
    addresses.
This is a permanent error; I’ve given up. Sorry it didn’t work out.

    <2005Bernies@kekocREMOVE.com>:
    Sorry, I couldn’t find any host named kekocREMOVE.com. (#5.1.2)

  17. Yes… Tim Berners-Lee… inventor of the World Wide Web. Someone suggested we call the awards “The Bernies” last year… as Tim Berners-Lee is to the web, and thus blogging, what John Logie Baird is to TV… and we all know and love “The Logies” 🙂

Personally, I’m of the opinion that officially it’s the “Australian Blog Awards” but it can be affectionately refered to as “The Bernies”… much like “The Academy Awards” are often refered to as “The Oscars”, but it’s “officially” known as “The Academy Awards”.

  18. Here in sunny Newport, the “Australian Blog Awards” are known as “The Vlados”.

Vlado: the man who doesn’t sleep.

  19. Could you send me the registration thingie because the link above doesn’t seem to be working (at least not on my PC).

    Flattered to have been nominated!

  20. I was reading in PC Authority the other day that the largest personal site in Australia at the moment is livingroom.org.au which hosts some great blogs. It gets 16% of the traffic of all personal sites in Australia (Tim Blair gets something like 9%).

Wondering why none of the livingroom blogs got nominated? Maybe their readers are all overseas or something.

  21. fantastic job dude. i for one appreciate the effort you’ve gone to. did my vote, and got a few new blogs to check out.
you should have a category for hoster of the best awards site 😉
